i have this free theme with image background on the header .. i want this image to be a link to my index page here is the code

You can't attach a link to the image itself, but you can link from the block containing the background. So you could have

, and clicking on the header will take you to Yahoo.

ditto injanier; If you, like he says, make the link target, say, the item in the "focus" of the background image the target of the "click" then you can make a big ol' block (or "div") clickable, targeted at yahoo.com. One think you might TRY to play with (or maybe it won't work) is a dot, with EXTREME padding, within that div, itself extremely padded, and the dot clickable, so that as a result the area is clickable...Be sure to test it in several browsers on several computers so's it looks okay!
