Tommy, I'm not sure what level of learning you are asking about. You could look at local colleges for a relevant class. You could also just start learning on your own.

The big players in computer animation (ILM, Pixar, etc) tend to use their own custom built programs. Some of the smaller players use commercial packages (Maya, Lightwave) that tend to be expensive and require serious hardware to run.

If you want to try your hand with a good open-source (free) program, then I would recommend pov-ray. I played around with this a few years ago. The developer community is still in full swing and the program still gets great reviews for what it does. Although it's primarily for 3D images, you can create fly-bys for animation.

Another open-source program that probably does 3d animation more easily (I'm not sure because I haven't tried it yet) is Blender, which is also well-reviewed.
