Well,I suppose it really all depends on how they conduct themselves in the public eye and deal with the media. Beckham, for example portrays himself(as does his wife),as a sort of Playboy/Film star *** celebrity. Nice guy though he may be,he doesn't really come across as much of an intellectual.
Then there's people like Gareth Southgate. Very intelligent, articulate and seemingly with alot of common sense.
Graham Le Saux was/is another of that type.
..........I think you know what I'm getting at!

Outside of the premier league, sportsmen, because knowing they have only a limited talent they play for love of the game and a reasonable wage. The dreadful term
" celebrity" , with a few exceptions, applies to the fantasists, narcissists and prima donnas in the premier league who do have a greater talent but believe it places them on a higher plane than the people who pay to watch them. The contempt they hold for football supporters was expressed brilliantly by Joey Barton of Man. City who summed it up perfectly with his remark
about such "superstars"; "I was in the world cup. I played like ****. Here's my book"

I think it depends on the player. If you take Beckham for example, he started out as a sportsman, but is now more of a brand, dont mind a celebrity!!
However Roy Keane, (the one and only) is(was?) a pure sportsman, driven by passion, the desire to win & a dislike of the media!!!
The overexposure that a lot of players get in the media these days does not help the cause, but i still think there are some who are just in it for the football

I would say sportsmen, though there are some who are given so-called celebrity status, and though i love my football, the top players are grossly overpaid.

Depends what league and what team! In the lower leagues they are Sportsmen, in the higher leagues, they seem to be more like actors or dancers with their lovely dives and rolling on the floor pretending to be in pain.
