Shaving upward ("against the grain") can cut the whiskers too short, below the skin level, which can cause whiskers to be "ingrown" (they coil up under the skin instead of growing out) and infected. Shaving downward with a blade doesn't give me as close a shave as I want, so I use a Norelco electric razor instead. It gives me a pretty close, smooth shave without cutting the whiskers below the skin level.

Shaving up or against the grain of the hair will give you razor burn, those nice little red bumps! On your neck, where the hair grows up, you should shave up...but the rest of your face, chin, etc...you should shave down. If its not working, maybe you need a sharper razor, try a new blade...either that or your beard is made of wire or something.....

According to the people who make the blades, shaving up (against the grain) may increase the risk for ingrown hair and may irritate the face. They have big $$ reasons to study this and know for sure so I think their data is pretty reliable.
If it's working ok for you, then you're probably fine.

while shaving downwards with the growth of hair is easier due to the less resistance, going up(or against the grain) get a closer and cleaner looking shave.

If it works do it. You should be shaving in the opposite direction of the hair growth. If the hair grows upward, shave downward and if the hair grows downward, shave upward. This works for most, but if the opposite works for you, do it.

You should always shave "with" the direction of hair growth. For most men, that is down on the face.
