Marketing, advertising, handing out free samples, any thing that promotes a business, service or product can be classified as a promotional activity. Hence big companies sponsor football teams etc to get their name or product name in front of loads of people.

Any kind of promotional activity for your product/service, the central tenets of marketing are the 4p's (or 7 s's but lets not go there), which traditionally are the various range of marketing activities being Product, Price, Place (ie where you do it) and final P for Promotion.

It not only includes information about new products but also can be about existing products that people yet do not know about. You can use various methods to do this. Flyers, advertisements in newspapers, TV, radio, etc. A new variety is to ask some of your friends to spread the word of your product or service on your behalf.
