You must realize that:
1) After the stressful event is done you will still be alive, therefore any situation is recoverable from your most basic state; you as you. If you're not alive afterwards, well then you won't be discomforted by it.
2) Stressing about an event uses energy. Energy you could be using to calm you self to think rationally about the problem, or energy you could be putting into solving the problem. Stressing only makes you stressed.
3) Practicing mindfulness; calm focused attention, would allow you to be in the optimal state of mind to solve the problem. You can regulate your breathing to help calm yourself if need be, simply be attentive to even breathing for a little while.

To overcome or rise above extreme stress one must take on more stress. Most importantly, this must be done in an intelligent manner. Special forces in the military are experts in this respect - they know a human being can survive nearly anything if properly trained. Ordinary stress can be dealt with in a conventional manner; extreme stress is life-threatening and the affected person is advised to adopt radical methods.

Exercise is extremely helpful. It helps balance the stress hormones surging through your body. It also helps pull your mind away from the problem for a little while. That may not seem like much, but it is extremely important in successful stress management.

Other beneficial strategies are: meditation, getting plenty of sleep, eating healthy, taking a good quality multivitamin with antioxidants to help heal any internal damage from the stress

First, you don't want to run away from it, that'll just make it worse. Then you definately don't want to drink alcohol in excess or take drugs, because not only will all that stress come back, I mean for all you know you could have a warrant on your head for illegal drugs or have a serious hang over (which will definately make it worse). Some things that DO work are just relax, find something that helps you relax, wether it's yoga, meditation, prayer, reading, listen to music whatever works for you. For me it's just to head on in there and try to solve the problem, pickle, predigament, I'm in right now, so that way it has less of a chance to happen again.

By first changing your perspective a little bit or drastically. That is always a good starting point.

I always put on some really soothing spiritual music, and stretch in creative moves. Somehow that always infuses me with something inside that makes me feel more connected with the universe, and makes me more accepting and stronger emotionally.

Bond with nature. Go for a run outside. A jog will clear your mind and body of toxins and u can literally feel the stress melting away with every thump of the foot.

Bond with a child. Their innocence will make you smile...which will relax your mind.

Eat healthy foods. Dont stay hungry. That makes stress worse. Keep yourself from going in a downward spiral. Within minutes, u will feel ur body thanking u. U'll feel better.

Practice patience, for the results u want.

Write down all ur thoughts going through your head, and literally burn that paper in front of u, signifying that u r banishing it and letting it go.

You'll know what works for u the best. Just get creative...

Move on to a less stressful place, just like water does when you put pressure on it, it flows to an area of less pressure. Life is too short to suffer the build up of stress. Stress is the reason for a lot of illnesses.

apart from walking away from the stressful situation? Well, you count to ten and breathe deeply then you look around at your environment (work, home) and find ONE THING that you can fix or solve or finish right now. Just one thing, it might be filing a document in a drawer, or replying to one email, or putting your husband's socks away ... but just thing. That problem is now complete and finished. So you find another, just small ones at first, and put them away and finish them. And so on. It's all a matter of putting the problems into a queue and dealing with them one at a time, as opposed to feeling like they're all a brick wall hurtling towards you!

It's important to acknowledge and address the stress proactively. For example, an exercise regimen helps a lot because it enables your body to deal with stress naturally and because it helps you build strength and endurance to deal with the physical implications of extreme stress.

Another important factor is to surround yourself with people who care about you, especially the ones who are good listeners and who are dependable. Don't let yourself feel isolated because that can lead to depression.

This is not a philosophy question - it is a psychology question.

Stress is not something to 'rise above' it is to be reduced. To do that use relaxation techniques or meditation.

Defiantly - do not use alcohol or other un-prescribed drugs as they will increase stress.

Try and remove the cause of the stress before it harms you.
To alleviate (manage) stress try:

Walking
exercising
talking with others
writing a journal
meditation
