The GOP fears that he could win the Democrat nomination and therefore the presidency.
They never attack anyone they think they can defeat, they ALWAYS go after those they know can kick their butts in a fair fight. So they try to cut them down any which way they can. Remember they eat their own too. Look at the hatchet job they did on John McCain in 2000 in S.C., having robot calls made telling the voters that McCain had a " black" baby as if it were a crime.
The talking points have been sent out to the ditto heads like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and their ilk. So we should be hearing more vitriol pretty soon.
I mean the right wing nut jobs on the pulpit have already started as well. Supposedly a pastor was telling his "flock" that Barack was second cousins with Osama, HUH!?! WTF!?!
The sad thing is the lemming mentality of the right will let smears take hold.
I see people like Sean, Archangel and snowball4 said that the smears came from the Hillary camp. That is what the GOP pundits want you to believe. They are the prime examples of the lemming mentality I spoke about.
The first smear was started by Insight Magazine an arm of the right wing leaning news rag, the Washington Times. The lie was then told as fact by the usual source, Faux News, I mean Fox News and Glen Beck et al.
It stated that Obama went to a Madrassa for Muslim extremism in Indonesia.He attended a school when he was 6 years old that was mixed and did have Muslims attending since the country is predominantly Muslim but the school also had Christians and Buddhists, something he spoke about in his both of his books
CNN sent a reporter to the school to try to validate the story and realized that it was a complete falsehood and that there was no link to the Hillary Clinton campaign Once that was brought to light, Fox News etc backtracked and then tried to say it was just opinions that said it was Hillary's camp

What smears would you be talking about. So far the fact that Obama went to a madrass school was outed by Hillary's campaign. It was reported in a Conservative magi zine, but that publication did reference the Clinton connection. Because:

1. He is a Black man and many Americans are racial bigots and intolerant..The civil rights movement hasn't reached their tiny brains yet.

2. He has an unusual name that many can't pronounce or spell. They believe that his middle name, Hussein, means he is a terrorist (they believe all people with that name are terrorist).

3. They are so sub-intelligent that they really believe that Senator Obama was raised in a Madrassa school with terrorists.

4. Many of our fellow citizens are uneducated, undereducated, never read a serious book, never read a newspaper, watch only Faux news, listen to the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck. That's where they get their "news".... So, a Black man, with a college education, who speaks well (instead of the "gangsta" slave-talk), is accomplished, sophisticated and has an unusual name scares the bejesus out of them.

The smears are all coming from his own party. It is typical politics as soon as the democratic primary is over, then they will all be friends and support the winner.

The amazing thing that is true in both parties is how bad they will attack their own and then turn around and tell you how great the person they spent millions of dollars and months trying to discredit is and want you to support them.

In head to head polls, Obama fairs better against Rudy than Hillary does. Obama can energize people, and could therfore be a force to be reckoned with if he can get by Hillary.
