My one month old has been up at night constipated. I called his pediatrician and they told me to give him one ounce water three times a day after a feeding. It is hard to because once he eats his formula he doesn't want to drink the water. It seems to work but when I stopped he had problems again. Has anyone had problems with constipated babies? If so what did you do?

Also has anyone ever used Gripe Water? I bought some from a nutrition store and I am trying it but how soon should it start to help with gas? When I started it he seemed to eat more that night too. Anyone know about this? Thanks for any help!

My usual answer - which seems appropriate since he doesn't want to swallow anything. Insert a glycerin suppository (an infant size one, or one-third of an adult size one), or if desparate, put a (very) small piece of ivory soap up the butt - guaranteed it'll make him do a doodle in 10-20 minutes.

I think you should consider trying a new formula. It's very possible that the formula you are using is doing it. Pediatrician offices very often have samples of all the diff. formula. Call the Dr. and see if you could get some samples of other formula and see if that helps. A change in the diet is easier for the baby to handle than medications and suppositories.

my 6 mo old had colic until she was 4 mo old--i tried Gripe water which seemed to help a lot when i first started using it. She did seem to have less problems passing gas and was somewhat calmer after giving it to her. She was difficult to give medicine to so I wasn't giving her the whole recommended amount. After a month or so it didn't seem to work as well but I think it's because she was getting such a lower dose. It did work almost instantly to stop hiccups.
