I will take a stab and say that you are referring to World Cup winning captains. As has been mentioned, if so, the order is wrong, but you have also got one of the capains wrong.
Viv Richards was not the captain of the West Indies when they won the first 2 World Cups, he was only captain for 1 World Cup - 1987. Clive Lloyd was the captain for the first 3 World Cups.
The correct pattern would go like this:
Clive Lloyd, Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Allan Border, Imran Khan, Arjuna Ranatunga, Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting.

I don't think there is any answeer to this question. If it is for captains of the world cup winning teams, then after India, it was Australia who won the world cup so Viv richard should not have followed Kapil's name. I cannot think of any connection here
