What looks great for all ages is a great pair of straight-cut, dark wash jeans with a nice jewel toned tank top or haulter top (that supports the girls and doesn't give too much away, of course). Go for a great rich color that compliments your skin tone and makes your eyes pop. For example, I have green eyes and fair skin, so I like to wear rich purple colors because purple makes green pop.
As far as shoes, what climate are you in? If it's snowing out, go for a great classic, pointy-toed pump. Can't go wrong with that, and it's very trendy, but age appropiate. If you're in a warmer climate, go for a great metallic strappy sandal with a heel.
Also, wear ONE piece of great jewelery. H&M, Forever 21 and even JC Penney all have great, inexpensive fashion jewlery.
The most important thing to remember is not to show too much off, but wear something that will flatter your body, not hang off of you like a sack. The jeans and trendy shirt look never fails and usually looks good for any age group (and is also very classy and fun). Try NY & Company. I just bought a very cute silk haulter top there that ties in a bow at your neck. It's classy but super sexy.
Good luck! I hope this helps you out.

First things first: get yourself some really good jeans. I think dark wash with a bootcut are the best (I love Bootleggar, but American Eagle has good ones too). Get a few awesome pairs...jeans are perfect because you can dress them up or down. Then, shoes: get one or two pairs of dressy shoes (like a pointy toe, and a flat), and then a cool, casual loafer style (for more comfort). Then shirts: definitely get some camisoles, and in different colours. Look into wrap sweaters and find shirts that you can layer, so that you're outfit looks put together but not too fussy. Keep your hair simple, and makeup too (gloss, powder and mascara) and you'll look very put together, not like a fashion victim.

I know what you mean about those smocks! Great if your pregnant but thats about it! I think they are very unflattering.
In answer to your question I am 35 and I go out in a nice pair of jeans and a nice top, corset tops and strapless tops are nice as well as halter tops as they can dress up a pair of jeans. I always wear jeans and never feel out of place. Failing that, play it safe with black trousers! They are another wardrobe essential that never seems to go out of fashion and are ideal if you want to look a little smarter.

Get som skinny jeans and a long fitted top that ends at your hip, like a tank top, and a short jacket with it (bolero) if you get black jeans they're more flattering and you can wear them as nice trousers as well to work or something. Get a top in a bit of a brighter colour like red. Top it off with some platform high heels (they're more comfortable to walk in than stilettos but give the same effect and are very in right now) and a large long neclace.Think "the Devil Wears Prada".

The retro look is very in at the minute, you could get a sexy bright retro top and wear it with some skinny jeans. There's some fab retro clothes on ebay at the mo. Try looking at PinkSquid clothing she has some really nice retro clothes in her shop and not too expensive.

forget your age - what used to be fashion for girls in their twenties can be worn just as well by women in their forties.
The golden rule of separates is one patterned, and one plain. So plain dark smart slim-leg trousers with a pretty soft curved-neck top in a pastel shade. Light necklace, heavy earrings, bangles and bangles (accessories are what really makes an outfit).

I think you should wear knee length tailored shorts and tailored waist coat with a nice dress shirt.
