it isn't dirt.

It is a crust that forms on the eyes for various reasons.

It could be Bacterial conjunctivitis, an infection caused by bacteria such as staphylococci, streptococci or haemophilus.

it could be Viral conjunctivitis, often associated with the common cold.

it could be Chlamydial conjunctivitis, caused by an organism called Chlamydia trachomatis.

It could be Allergic conjunctivitis, common in people who have other signs of allergic disease such as hay fever, asthma and eczema and often caused by antigens like pollen, dust mites or cosmetics.

it could be Reactive conjunctivitis - chemical or irritant conjunctivitis as some people are very susceptible to chemicals in swimming pools or to smoke or fumes and this can cause an irritation of the conjunctiva with discomfort, redness and watering. In such cases these irritants should be avoided.

Or, as one of my daughters had, it could be caused by sebaceous gland seepage around they eyes and not any of the other problems.

It seems more like sand from the sandman. It's just a normal thing that forms while we are sleeping. It is probably there to keep our eyelids from sticking together. It is something that most everybody would admit to and nothing we can do about it. It part of our existence. Isn't it better to exist?

My kids call them "eye boogers." LOL and we don't know why. Contrary to what Answerer #1 says, there could be "no" cause for it. If a house is dusty, it could be that the eyelids fluttering (R.E.M.) during sleep causes the dust particles to assemble in the corner of the eyes.
