the pet store owner said it could be done, but the goldfish would die alot more often and i would just have to replace it, like every 3-5 weeks or something, not becuase of the beta but becuase of the sive bowl, how about another beta, or is that another bad idea?

No, it's not a good idea at all. Mainly because the goldfish will very quickly out grow a bowl. Also, the goldfish needs much cooler water than a betta, so if the bowl is cool enough for a goldfish the betta is not going to do well and visa versa. Betta will do ok in a bowl provided you do a complete water change every 2-3 days without fail. Otherwise they are better off in a tank with a filter. Goldfish will need at least a 20 gallon tank by the time they grow up.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GOLDFISH BOWL!!! GF need 10 gallons per fish, filter, heater and airstone. You shouldn't house GF with anything other than GF. Goldfish are not the simple beginner fish that are so easy to keep like the petstore told you. They require care and maintenience far beyond most tropical tanks. Just take a look at all the fish questions asked on Yahoo groups, most of them are goldfish related. You think if they were so simple to keep you wouldn't have this many problems would you? So no goldfish in that bowl please. Just the beta and change all the poor things water every 5 days. Declornate and make sure the temperature of the water remains the same. Better yet buy a beta keeping guide.

No fish should be in bowls, they are for candy not fish. Goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons for each baby fancy anyway and 20+ once they start growing. Some people do keep bettas in bowls, I don't but if you do then you must do water changes at least every few days, more or less depending on the actual size of the bowl.

Unlike what a lot of people say, male bettas can live peacefully with lots of different types of fish, some people even keep them with goldfish but you have to keep in mind goldfish are cold water fish and bettas are tropical so it is not an ideal situation.

If you think it is OK to keep killing a fish every couple weeks then you shouldn't have fish or any pet for that matter. Goldfish if taken care of properly can live for more then 20 years and you seem to not care that the ones you get will be dieing as babies. Male bettas cannot be kept together, they can't be kept with females either except while breeding. If you already have a bowl please return it and don't buy anything else until you do a little research on whatever fish you want and don't believe anything the people at the pet store tell you that told you that you can keep them together and for saying a bowl was OK, since they don't know what they are talking about and just want your money.

Here is a good site for learning about goldfish, http://kokosgoldfish.com/

And here is a good one for bettas, http://www.firsttankguide.net/betta.php

There are many more out there if you do a search on google or someplace else.

No. You shouldn't put those two fish together.

Goldfish get too big for a fish bowl.

Go with the betta. Only one though, two will fight "siamese fighting fish"

As for what the pet store guy said......I can't figure out what he was thinking......you can't look at fish as just an object to replace. They are living creatures. Fish can live many years.

Goldfish can live for years, some have lived up to 10 years old, so why would it be ok to put it in an environment where you have to buy a new one every 3 to 5 weeks?!!!! That's insane and cruel. Get the goldie a tank and a filter! You can put the betta in with him, but when the goldie gets too big he will be inclined to eat him. Even though he can live at the same temps, the betta needs warmer temperatures than the goldie, he'll be much happier with a heated, filtered tank. Please for the sake of the fish DON'T put them in a bowl!

It is really sick that someone would recommend keeping something in living conditions that they know will kill it. Goldies should live from 7 to 40 years, 3-5 weeks is animal cruelty. These are not decorations, these are living creatures that suffer slow painful deaths in these types of environments.

Shame on that petstore!

I hope you are a better person than they are.

As long as there is enough space for them to move around each other, there shouldn't be any problem having them both in the bowl together. Typically a beta fish, which is called a fighting fish or whatever, will not fight with other types of fish. Only other betas. I wouldn't change the water every week, as that will not help keep the pH balance in your water. Consult a pet store to get the best advice. I am actually planning on putting a beta in my fish tank soon, and I have gold fish. The only thing I will worry about is whether or not my goldfish will eat the fins of the beta, which goldfish are known to do. Good luck

no, goldfish are coldwater and need filtered tanks of at least 20 gallons, and bettas are tropical and need filtered heated tanks of at least 2.5 gallons
