Why didn't the teachers tell the students to hide under their desks ? They made them all stand in the hallyways, Common sense would tell you that once the roof gets torn off they would be more vulnerable to flying debris.

I guess they thought if they were in the center hall they would be safest. It's a tough call to make. They had no way of knowing the roof would blow off. I feel bad for all of them. They are in my prayers.

Actually, the hallway was the safest place to be in the school. When a tornado hits, you should be in the innermost room in your home (if you don't have a basement). You will be better protected by walls than you will be by more windows. Tornadoes can cause windows to blow in, and flying glass and debris can be deadly. Plus, if the students just crouched under desks, they would have been in the classrooms. Some of these classrooms got obliterated. And really, when it comes down to it, a tiny desk isn't going to come even close to standing up to a tornado.

And finally, you said that "common sense would tell you that once the roof gets torn off they would be more vulnerable to flying debris." Well, common sense would tell you to stay away from windows during a tornado and common sense would also tell you that a classroom has a roof too. So really, who's to say that the roof of a classroom was any safer than the roof of a hallway?

I'm guessing you've never experienced a tornado.

A hallway is far safer than a classroom because there's less unsupported ceiling. Further, in a tornado, you need to put as many walls as you can between yourself and the outside. A desk will do you absolutely no good during an F3, F4, or F5 twister. You and the desk would just get sucked outside and die in the maelstrom.

The answers already posted here are correct. Getting underneath a desk is actually more effective when there is an earthquake. As stated above, the innermost part of the building is where you would want to be during a tornado.

We have no idea what was going through their minds at that time. Perhaps they panicked. Either way, what happened there is horrible and my heart goes out to their families. Thank you.
