its short for rehabilitation, people who are addicted to things like alcohol or drugs go into rehab in order to stop their addiction and better their lives.

There's actually two main kinds of rehab.
The most heard-of kind is the kind like Brittany Spears is checking herself into and out of lately. When you're addicted to drugs or alchohol, there are several stages you have to go through to be clean and rid of your addiction. Detox it's probably the most physically grueling, it's when whatever is toxic in your system (alcohol or drugs) is being completely cleared out. Then there is therapy, where you work through the reasons behind the drug use, and come up with a plan to stay away from it from then on. None of these things are easy to do anyway, but when you're out there living your life and trying to do it, it's dang near impossible, because you are focused on several things at once, and you aren't strong enough in the early stages to overcome your temptations. At rehab, you're away from your everyday life, away from the toxic stuff, away from the people who can bring you down, and you're with professionals who can help you learn the life skills you need to get back to life, drug-free.
The term "rehab" is also used for the period of physical/occupational therapy a person goes through after a major injury, like a car crash or stroke.

It's a place to go usually when you have dependency problem such as drugs or alcohol. You receive the help and guidance you need to get back to leading a normal non-dependent life.
