My favorite B&W movie is Harvey.
It stars Jimmy Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd.
The plot of the story, without giving anything away, is about a man who is friends with an invisible 6ft. tall white rabbit, and how he changes everyones perspective on what's important in life. It sounds crazy but it's a great movie.

"Monsieur Verdoux" Charlie Chaplin's first 'talkie', c.1938. Funny as hell, great physical comedy and memorable lines: "My dear, despair is a narcotic; it lulls the mind into indifference."
"Dr. Strangelove" c.1964, Stanley Kubrick and a cast of several, future Oscar-winners-to-be...another classic comedy with Peter Sellers playing 3 roles.
