Its actually a cultural thing. The same way when you grow up and learn how to speak and you just know what a word means, when you grow up you see colours and your subconcious associates them with certain things.

In different countries with different cultures, these colours mean things. For example in the UK/Britain the colour red can mean passion, love, anger and the colour white means purity, peace.

In China the colour red is considered to be lucky (thats why a lot of Chinease logos use red in them) and in countries like Iran/Iraq/Albania the colour white is symbolic of death.

Because most of things in the world have names.
We made the colour naames for our own convenience, and so we identify "red" with the colour of a ripe tomato.

People by nature are always trying to find the symbolism in everything. Back in the middle ages (and probably long before!) people in the nobility tried to find ways to separate themselves from the rest of society. By dying their clothes separate colors, they were able to make themselves "better" and identify themselves, since peasants cared more about survival than looking sharp in their designer tunics :). Colors like purple and blue came to mean royalty and power. Other colors have obvious meanings like bloodred, and so on.

each color has its own meaning so that when its used, it expresses a certain feeling or characteristic. for example, in national flags, some use white for purity, red for their braveness, blue for the cooperation and peace, etc.. roses also have its own color and meaning.
