I have to agree that you get what you pay for.....however, if you don't have money to buy/extend your virus protection I would jump on the free stuff until I could replace my previous coverage....I couldn't imagine not having the anti spam, etc. It is such a pain to get pop ups!

Good luck.

Many free ones out there. The above what I use and I guess it work well. It has caught things on installation, not sure if it was a virus, but, it warned me it was there.
Some Anti-virus will "Think" something a virus when it may not be, which is good. I first Quarantine the suspected virus and search it on the Internet to see what it do. Once I know everything work OK then the suspected virus can be deleted. If, something stop running and there no information it a virus, I can return it back to it's place.
Remember there many good free Virus Programs, you only need one. You can always do an on-line scan to Double Check.

I've used AVG on and off for years with no trouble. Aside from being free, it also uses fewer resources than a lot of the paid programs, which can slow anything but the latest computers down to a crawl.
Of course, I also use common sense, like not opening unknown attachments or opening files from a floppy without scanning.
Periodically I'll use the Trend Housecall online check just to be sure. I also have Spybot or AdAware on any computer I use, and my e-mail programs are set to shovel most spam into its own folder.

Grisoft's AVG Free edition is a great free anti virus for home users. It comes top in a lot of reviews by pc mags, review sites etc. I know lots of people who use this and have never had any problems at all with it. Before you make any decisions I would suggest googling review sites for 'free anti virus' and also online pc mags (computeractive is good)- check these out then make your mind up.

You will need a little work if you want to get a free one.
The best is ESET NOD32 described and announced as the best anti-virus program on the world.

Go to www.utorrent.com and download the program.
The click on www.demonoid.com (today-open registrations every friday)and register and search for "NOD32".
You will find a lot of files and choose one of them.
Then download it(the uTorrent program recently installed will install it)and after installing open NOD32 and install it normally.
After that you have included a,so named, patch.
Click on it again and browse to folder where you installed NOD32 and you will have a free NOD32 for 1500000 days...too little?

I have free AVG version 7.5 and it's great. It doesn't have all the plug ins for anti spam and anti spy ware but I have other free utilities to deal with those. Good luck with your choice.
