This has never happened to me, but very recently (end of January) happened to two friends at two different bars in town. People can avoid this by keeping an eye on their drinks at all times, go out in groups, get drinks directly from the bartender (don't allow someone you really don't know to go to the bar and bring it back for you).

I used to run a bar in a college town. I would frequently hear claims of drink spiking all the time. It usually came from some lush who had too many shots and was unwilling to accept responsibility for her own drunken actions. I know it's a very real crime and it does happen, but whenever these stories start circulating (as they have been periodically for decades) you'll find women blaming their own over-indulgence on some boogey man.

WHO is spiking the drink? Either a stranger is doing it while you're not looking or someone you don't know very well spikes it after buying it for you. Buy your own drink and keep an eye on it.

WHAT are they spiking the drinks with? Knockout drops or pulverised pills I suppose.

HOW are they getting the substance into the drink? If I saw a guy dropping liquid or powder into a drink I'd tell somebody. Wouldn't you? So he's probably not doing this out in the open.

I am 100% sure this is going on somewhere, but ask the basic questions and you can take necessary steps to prevent this from happening to you. You can also surmise that it isn't as prevalent as some people would make you think it is.

Not exactly....by spiking it means to put a drug in someones drink. My drink was laced and it's an old trick. In my early days with one of my jobs a couple of mates invited me to have a drink with them and I said that I was not a beer drinker and i'd settle for a pint of light ale. One of them went to the bar then came back with my drink. I did not feel comfy at the table and knocked my glass over and spilled the lot. "Argh" they said "you have some luck,we put some strong whisky in your drink".

Never. I always buy my own drinks and am quite aware of who's lurking next to me when I go clubbing. Never let my drink leave my sight.

Drink spiking occurs to both men and women so beware.

No, it's never happened to me or anyone that I know personally. I have never left my drink unattended, nor have I asked anyone to watch it for me. People need to be careful everywhere they go. There are alot of sick people out there and none of them can be trusted. It is just a matter of being aware and not being careless. Thank you.
