There is a famous ancient problem in logic which begins when a man called Epimenides says "All Cretans are liars". It turns out that Epimenides is himself a Cretan, so . . . is he telling the truth, or is he lying?

However, there is no other popular reference to Cretans being particularly great liars.

Liars are present both in ancient and modern diplomacy and trade. As long as there are gullible people, liars would abound. One ancient people, the Egyptians traded gold with Hittites of Anatolia for iron, at that time a very rare commodity. Iron cost more than gold pound-for-pound, so the Egyptians skillfully cover heavy stone slabs with sheets of gold to make it appear that they are exchanging gold slabs for iron. The Hittites discovered and recorded the scam in their palace archive around 1300BC, making the ancient Egyptians cheat and liars, and could not be trusted in trade and diplomacy.

Determinists? Seriously - even if everything were determined by circumstances, I live in a system in which my free will seems to work very well - and that's the way I like it.

Historically the Pharisees were known to be very dishonest people, who would get one over on other people at any chance (e.g. sell pieces of glass as diamonds). Nowadays the word pharisee is used for people that are self-righteous and hypocritical.

Herodotus was known both as the Father of History and the Father of Lies. This was because he filled in his histories with imaginitive stories.

The Bible tells us that the Jews were Liars and incestuous. (Check the Book of Genesis).

The present Liars are Republicans.
