We are looking for someone straght from college so i guess HNC or HND type level...... this is the 1st time we have taken someone on so not sure what these guys expect!! Also, he would have to travel lots so should we pay for fuel? so confused! Can anyone offer any advice?

it depends upon how much you expect them to be able to do. if you are looking for someone literally straight from college and you can get them on a few bespoke training courses then probably around 16 or 17k depending upon the area of the country you are in.
As for the travel then if there is lots of travelling involved a company car could be a good incentive to a college leaver and may allow you to cut the salary a bit.
if not and you expect them to use their own car then you should pay a car allowance to cover extra insurance, wear and tear etc. and then allow them to claim their milage at the recommended government rates (about 10ppm at the mo i think).

Not sure about what you should pay them for a salary but if they use their own car for travelling then they should be able to claim a mileage allowance. The current Inalnd Revenue rates are 40p per mile for the first 10,000 then 25p per mile after that. You as the employer can pay them anything up to this for a mileage allowance but over and above this amount would be taxable. If you play them less than the Inland Revenue level then they could complete a tax return at the end of the year to claim tax relief on the difference. Giving them a company car wold cost the employee additional tax and the Company class 1a national insurance. Your accountant should be able to give you further information and advise you on the best option.

Contact local recruitment companies (or specialist) and ask them. Free advice that you don't have to take or use their services.
