The total discount is 350-308=42. if you divide the discount amount by the original price you get the percent expressed as a decimal which is 42/350=.12 Now multiple the decimal valur by 100 to convert to a percent and you get .12(100) = 12%

when you substract 350 with 308, the result is 42.
then do the statement (42/350)*100, the answer is 12%.
Therefore the discount rate is 12%

from the eqauation
D=P*r
where the D is discount
P is principal
r is discount rate
The Principal is substract to the Discount which remains the Leser price denoted as L.
so
P-D=L
substitute
P-D=L
P-(Pr)=L
P(1-r)=L
to get the discount rate(r)
1-r=(L/P)
-r=(L/P)-1
r-1-(L/P)
From Given:
the $350 is P and $308 is L
substitute:
r=1-(308/350)
r=.12
or 12%
the discountrate is 12%

The discount rate is different from a more normal interest rate. The two are separate concepts in financial mathematics. The discount rate is based on the future cash flow in lieu of the present value of the cash flow. The divisor, for the discount rate, is the resulting future value, including the income. The divisor in the calculation of interest is the original investment.
