By killing each other and working hard not to be killed. The environment favored the North against the Americans because the North were used to fighting in the jungle and they knew their land well. US soldiers were not jungle fighters, so the terrain worked against them. Of course, we had the weapons to destroy the enemy, but as in Korea, our Federal government was unwilling to use those weapons at the expense of our troops.

Good question. Object of NVA and Vietcong was to kill and be killed. Little thought to survival. US military command sacrificed troops with little thought to survival. Vietnam ended up a toe to toe slaughter.
