lately I have been wondering if I might be borderline autistic, although my friend says as I cannot do maths and have a sence of humour I can't possiably be. what are the other symptoms? I have trouble following conversations with more than one person, am happy alone and dont like being hugged much, I have little obsessive thoughts like if I start up stairs with one foot, I must start with my opposite the next time, wierd things like that.

Well, the only way to know for sure is to be diagnosed by a doctor. I have Autism and you do have some of the symptoms as I do. But do you sometimes, like feel spaced out sometimes? Do you staire at things sometimes for no reason? I do some times but I have a pretty severe case of Autism though. I'm obsessed with computers and video games so I am really good at them but that seems to be the only thing I seem to be good at. I do not like to be touched, and there are certain types of clothes I will not wear, do ask me why. I never had many friends in school because I just don't talk when I am in public unless I'm with my mom or dad. I had good teachers that taught me well, and that is why I am able to type this answer to you now. I have spent my whole life on a computer. I know I'm not a smart girl but I always do the best I can. But if you are just borderline autistic, that you should not have too many problems, but good luck anyway.

There is an Autism spectrum, with many dissorders relating to it, from mild ADD all the way to severe full-on autism. OCD can often go hand in hand with these. High Functioning Autism can sound exactly as you are describing although not knowing anything else about you or seeing you in daily life I would not take that as a diagnosis!! High-functioning autistics are never "cured" but can definately train themselves to act more "normal" (not that normal is all that marvelous) and develop more self-mind awareness. If you are really curious there are online questionaires but they are generally made for children. The "list" that people think of with Autism is somewhat misleading. It would take too long to explain why, just suffice it to say that a Psychologist who had worked with HFA's (high functioning autistic) adults and adolescents before is your best start. You may learn a lot about yourself and learn to accept yourself the way you are, and this in turn can facillitate change if that is what you would like. Many HFA's adults do not discover this about themselves until they are WELL into adulthood. It's not called the "invisible disease" for nothing. You are not "wierd" you are unique, you are YOU.

One difinitive characteristic of Autism is heightened senses i.e. (hearing) slamming doors can be deafening: (sight) lights can drive them crazy: (smell) pungent smells can send them crazy
Although you mentioned being sensitive to touch and repititious behaviour these are in fact characteristics and you could very well be borderline but there are more complex things that added together give a more accurate diagnosis
The only way to know absolutely is to be tested. Go see psychologist or specialist then theres no guessing after that

It sounds like you may be slightly autistic. My son has autism, he's 7 years old. Go to a Developmental Specialist and be evaluated. If you are diagnosed as being autistic, you can receive SSI.

well first off if you were actually autistic you probably wouldn't be in a place where you were wondering if you were...but just so you're at ease autism interferes with your communication abilities and it usually develops when you're a little kid. Sometimes somebody who is autistic would seem to be deaf so if you can talk to your friend then you probably aren't.

not sure about the 'conversation part' but I know people that don't like to be hugged.... also I know people that feel like they need to do these 'weird routines' like start up stairs with one foot ... but I think these 'weird routines' is a sign of 'OCD'...

you sound more like an introverted obsessive compulsive, maybe with a touch of ADD. Please go see a psychiatrist as they have meds, time, and information to treat these disorders and help you function normally.
