They do it because they can't do anything else. I think career criminals can't function in normal society. They are maladjusted for one reason or another. There are very few successful career criminals. Almost all of them get caught eventually.

I asked a client this question once. He came from a nice family who had provided him with a good home, worked hard and were more than willing to support him through educaction.
In a nutshell his reply came down to
1. The people he hang around with were more interesting than his boring middle of the road family.
2. Why do training for a job when the people he humg around with were telling him how much better off he was by not working.
3. If he got a job he would be subsidising the people he hung around with.
4. He could not see the benefits of not committing crime.
5. To be accepted he needed to go along with the people he hung around with.
He is now in prison for the next 12 years for armed robbery. The people he hung around with don't visit him just his family
Maybe the family did not live in a mansion with swimming pools and maye the family were restricted with cash to provide the same has the people he hung around with. Maybe the family are just downright boring.
But maye this is a lesson we should e showing to kids in school - For the majority - life is never easy or constantly exciting.
But before you go looking for answers in others look to your family.
If it is not a functional family - then try to do better, make a difference.
If it is a functional family - then try to do better, let your family lead y example

It is hard to be successful and play by the rules. It takes real work and often a great deal of time. Many people want to get ahead now. So they choose what they perceive to be the easy way to do that. Obviously in the long haul crime generally doesn't pay. But, many people are not willing to work for a long term goal.

Example:
A kid grows up in the projects without a father. His mother is at work all the time, so he basically has no parental influation what-so-ever. He turns to his friends to fill in the parental role. Without parents, they're not told what is right and what is wrong. Which do you think is more attracting: robbing a bank for 20 minutes and get a few thousand dollars, or work minimum wage?
These kids don't know better or else they'd still be in school. Over 50% of crime is caused by kids under the age of 18.

The free market.
If you have limited skills and capacities, either through circumstance (perhaps the labour market may drop your inome through mass immigration) or though nature, to earn a living and an income, then robbery, fraud, drug smuggling, mugging etc... makes perfect economic sense.
A free market, with no obligations to your fellow man - no functioning welfare system or concept of citizenship and insurance to catch those who will fall, create powerful economic reasons to get ahead and get income by breaking the law.
Only by raising the penalties and fines will people stop economic crime.
There are of course a far smaller number of non-income based crimes whose prime purpose is to satifiy baser motives - sex, power, fear, greed.

Man be warned, once you get in there is almost no way out. You get in deeper and deeper and in the end the law catches on you. I live in India. Here people have different motivations for crime the main being poverty, people are too poor to feed their family and they turn to crime.

totally different mind-set from the mainstream population. if you've ever studied this aspect of life, we all have to deal with each other in one way or another, you and i, in locking our doors when we go to sleep at night, in staying aware of our surroundings when we're out and about, not going to the areas of our metropolises that are "crime-ridden," so the aspect of the life of crime is usually foreign to people "like us," who have computers or access to them, and pay our bills, have jobs, etc. in most cases, those who are living lives of crime don't feel they have a choice, they feel it was thrust upon them, and cannot see the bigger picture. organized crime is very sexy, very appealing to those who want to take a short-cut to wealth and comfort, who don't take the time to zoom out and see the world for what it really is. hollywood glamourizes it, so what chance does a young person have if they're even remotely connected to a criminal life? choice? not so much. that's my opinion anyway.

Desperation ..........
....to feel power/control (never taught the power of self control)
....to get noticed/ feel like somebody (at all costs)(felt unloved)
....to be held accountable (nobody cared enough to enforce rules)
....to pay debts (were allowed to freeload in past)
....to pay for an addiction (brought on by all the above)
This is the domino effect that starts within the "family nucleus."

Get something for nothing - emotional thrill
Instant gratification - no work, no waiting
Physical addiction - drugs, alcohol
Entitlement - everyone else has it, why shouldn't I have it too
Deprivation - I didn't get my way before, I can now
Sense of belonging and to gain respect - look what I have
Anger and bitterness - they did wrong to me and did not respect me

I would never, but perhaps those who do think that they have no other choice. It could also be that it was the only example they had from parents or family & don't know any other way. Lastly, it could simply be, because they have "criminal minds".
