There is something called dark energy that exerts a negative pressure on the universe and causes it to expand. We can measure the affect but have no idea what it is.

The expansion of space attributed to dark energy dominates only over very large distances. Within galaxy clusters, gravity is the dominant force, and galaxies in clusters are not moving away from each other. One example is the observation that the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy are on a collision course.

Because of the initial energy of the big bang. The "dark matter" might decide whether the universe will keep expanding or not.
