The order of Knights was responsible for Dragons to go into hiding, the inventions of Balista and gunpowder made the fights unfair and the dragons were being slaughtered. Dragons are an intelligent species and enjoy the hunt as much as man does, but man changed the playing rules. They are just biding their time until man has shown that he can once again compete with them in an equitable manner. ALthough they have also evolved into a species that finds sporting challenges in things other than the hunt, they miss the sheer challenge that man had presented them when it was just man against beast, scales Vs Armor, steel against claws.

Well because etheir because of the ice age which hit on the period of the dinsaurs, they became extinct. But since a few species lived till the midevil period such as the western dargon they were mostly killed by knights for fun and later became extinct completely. Well if you think about it logicaly, If you find a dragon egg that still has DNA in it you could probubly try to clone it.

If you accept the theory that fire breathing dragons existed, (got to be honest I haven't seen many around lately,) then they probably became extinct in the early days of humanity for similar reasons to most other very large animals. The world isn't really designed to support very large things, small, simple, life forms do much better in terms of longevity of the species (see Bill Bryson's Short history of almost everything)

I think the near extinction of the dragons was part of the divine plan. Most people forget or ignore the fact that dragons are mentioned in the bible along with unicorns. I am not speaking of the "dragon" meaning satan or any of his many forms.

near extinction? I haven't seen any dragons around recently. If they did actually exist I would say it was probably due to over hunting by the large population of knights in shining armor.
