The first great poet that western literature recognizes was Homer who wrote The Illiad and The Oddesy. Homer was, as far as we know, a roaming teller of tales so that would make him a loner with a love for the spotlight.
I think that kind of fits most poets.
The best inspiration for poetry seems to be observation and introspection. Whether it be uplifting or depressing poetry seems to be the writers interpretations of the world as they understand it based upon their experiences.
Another characteristic of many great poets is a tendency to endulge in liquid refreshment. I think being something of a critic on the condition of human affairs is of the greatest importance.
Happy poetry seems fairly scarce and sort of fluffy and silly, doesn't it?

Melancholy brings inspiration.
Because you don't feel like doing anything but stay in it's probably that you would start expressing your feelings and thoughts by writing.
If you are joyful you have soooooooooo many things to do that I don't think someone would stay in and express his joy with a poem.

People say that love is the greatest inspiration. If it hurts you , you write sad poems. If it makes you feel great you write joyfull poems. But most of poets consider that melacholy is a better inspiration , because the poet has to express really strong feelings

The best inspiration for a Poet (Or any kind of Artist) is I think to be able to pick up on the right things in life and then put them together in a way which is your own. And then to see which mood this inspires in you.(Sort of)
