There are cannibals even in purportedly civilized countries. In the news some months back (?last year) there was a man in Japan charged with cannibalism who managed to beat the charges and became notorious on the internet for looking for people who want to be eaten - on eBay I think! Most recent one in the news appears to be this guy in the UK Peter Brian,
Also be aware of an infamous art display by a wierd Chinese guy called Zhu Yu which features pictures of what appears to be Zhu cooking and eating a human foetus. This is though not to have actually occured but to be a bit of seriously twisted art.

Cannibalism is increasingly rare in the modern world and is usually brought about by one of two things. Starvation, or Tribalism.
In the case of Tribalism, it is tradition in a few remaning remote areas to eat the remains of a warrior from an opposing tribe whom you killed in battle. The motivation here is both spiritual and emotional, you are gaining the "power" of your slain enemy by consuming him. This is increasingly rare as these tribes are being forced into the modern world.
Starvation however is a much more powerful motivator. Many have hear the story of the Donner party crossing the US in winter and getting trapped in a winter storm for months, surviving only by consuming their dead. Perhaps less well known and more modern is the practice of cannibalism during World War II on some islands in the pacific when the imperial forces were abandoned. With no food and little hope, man can be convinced to do whatever is necessary to survive.

The Kuru tribe of New Guinea are cannibalistic as they (the women) eat the brains of dead relatives as a ritual of respect. Unfortunately this lead to a disease within the tribe which consisted of increased unsteadiness, shaking and soon death which the tribe called 'Kuru'. Brain examinations found that their brains were full of holes/spongy. It was found that this disease was being passed on by an infectious agent in the brain tissue - this disease is very similar to CJD in humans, BSE in cows and scrapie in sheep - in fact these are all prion diseases. Kuru was found to be the first human transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (prion disease).

As far as I know, the only animals that routinely kill and devour humans are polar bears. In some parts of the world cannibalism still occurs, but relatively infrequently.
