We always called them seagulls, but I don't know if that is right since we are more than 1500 miles to the ocean. Where do they live when they are not out in the field?

Seagull is the term used by people for most larids (gulls)... very inaccurate. Gulls live all over and not necessarily near the sea. I regularly see lots of ring-billed gulls on fields after they've been plowed. http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Ring-billed_Gull.html

I don't know where you live, but lots of birds will show up when you plow a field. They show up to eat on the insects and worms that are exposed afterwards. If it looks like a seagull, my only guess would be a egret. I always see crows doing this.

I believe but not sure without a description or picture, that it's probably a kill-deer. listen for the call and it will sound like "killdeer."
