Underdeveloped (or in economics terms less-developed) country is simply one where the resources of the area are not used to their full potential due to the lack of another resource. Typically you would cite the African wealth of minerals and lack of technology and machinery

what`s wrong with the European Union? Anyway, the term that is usually preferred is "developing countries" ( underdeveloped sounds a bit offensive ). They are situated mainly in the Southern hemisphere and almost all share a common colonial past. There lives more than half of Earth`s population with access to less than 1/5 of its wealth. Famine, rural ecomonies, poor education and healthcare, dictatorship and civil wars are common for such developing countries as Ethiopia, Sudan, Chad etc.

OK just remember the difference between countries and continents, like:
Asia is a continent, etc. Just checking, you maybe already got that.
Any place that does not have irrigation and technology and guns galore is not up to OUR standards, so we run them over with our tanks and label them as less than us.
It's the White Man's Burden all over again.
Yikes.

Underdeveloped countries such as Asia, Africa and Latin America share common characteristics, such as poverty, high birthrates, and economic dependence on the advanced countries such as the USA, France, Great Britain, etc.

This term is no longer used because of its perceived pejorative nature. The World Bank, for example, classifies countries into the following groups depending on their per-capita GNI:

Low income -- $875 or less;
Lower middle income -- $876 - $3,465;
Upper middle income -- $3,466 - $10,725;
High income -- $10,726 or more.

(The figures are 2005 GNI per capita computed using the Atlas method.)
