Could be a number of things.

Ad-ware - Great program
www.lavasoft.com - free

Memory, CPU, Video or all of them

Your computer could need more memory depending on if the file your tryin to play is high quality and a big file size. you should have at least 512 to 1 gig of memory.

CPU is to slow and your trying to run to many things at once
go-to (start) - (Run) type in -> MSCONFIG (a new window will pop up) go-to - start-up tab. and see how many programs are running. Now be careful with this because some programs might need to be started up to run correctly but for the most part you can uncheck everything.. (But to be safe just uncheck the things you know of)

Video card could be not good enough to run the video but that's a slim possibly for that

Most probably, there is a problem with your Operating system. This may have been affected by a virus. I think the best way is to have your hard drive reformatted. Important data usually is to be transferred to another hard drive or burned on a CD to make sure important documents are not lost. After doing that, get a good anti-virus like MacAfee or others.

You have some sort of spyware on your computer. I would recommend getting a really good sypware program and anti virus program and let it run. Also get a really good firewall.

i think your computer is RAM deprived ! i suggest you add more RAM or it could also possibly be that your pc is dumped with unwanted softwares, malwares, adwares and maybe even viruses ! so best you go for a fresh install of your OS or remove unwanted stuff by running anti-spyware softwares like adware-se, spydoctor etc and also "clean" your pc with ccleaner etc ! to know more about the softwares i mentioned google it !
