Reputation - they want to sell a product to companies. And when ppl know their product and it is good this gives them reputation. This reputation serves as a sales argument. They also sell advanced features to private ppl like You and me. The give away serves as a bait. They are more likely to sell when ppl know the products basic functions. They have a foot in the door. ppl that have use the free version have positive feelings about AVG.

Giving away and reputation is also free advertisement. You promote their product by asking here. If You asked about free anti virus and my answer would include a link it would be even better for them and their position in the search engines.

Apart from Reputation: It is good when ppl know to use Your software - then their boss does not loose time to instruct them.

And AVG wants many ppl to use their product to get info fast when new viruses are in the wild. A big user base ensures that they can get that info fast. The more users the faster one of their user base is affected - that is what statistics say.

Giving away security software also reduces the risk for their customers. It also reduces traffic ( spreading of viruses costs network resources ). This makes them popular with their own clients because they save money.

There is without doubt also an altruistic element - they give to those that can possibly not afford it. That is part of Western social values. It makes them feel good. And it gives them public standing.

That is my ideas about it anyway.

There is a concept called Open Source Software and this means that the software that U use guaranties that to be free and that U can edit its software code too by the company license
what the company win from that???
simply it wins a big number of developers for its software because if I can edit it so they can make a new version with some new extra features
Example for the open source softwares is the Linux and I think that U know how better is it and also the AVG :)

AVG free just cant protect a commercial network. What they get out of is a loyal customer base,, lots of traffic to their website which they can sell advertising space... and Some people may like their product so much they will buy it and get full support or Buy it for their networks at work. I will never pay for a firewall, popupblocker, spy-ware scanner or virus scan...people who do are just unaware of the great free stuff that is out there. The people at Best Buy, COMP USA, and makers of virus scans just want your money. That is capitalism.. They will help you if you pay them, Grisoft has a better approach in my book and i don't ask questions.
