When I was pregnate with my son, I had alot of extreme lower back pain and my doctor said it was ok to have the heating pad on my back but not on my stomache due to the risk of getting the baby to hot and causing over heating in the water around the baby witch can cause harm to the baby.

Hi,
Firstly, Congratulations!
I personally would discontinue using the heating pad on my stomach during pregnancy, as I know that spa baths are not recommended during pregnancy as they overheat the body, which can effect the development of the foetus.
It is definately ok to use something like a hot water bottle, as it will cool during use, but I would steer clear of an electric heat pad for use overnight. Short periods of use are ok on a low heat setting though, particularly if you have aches and find it comforting.
FYI - I have had 2 pregnancies and have read about this in several pregnancy magazines.
In any case, you won't be able to sleep on your stomach for much longer anyway.
Best wishes for a healthy, happy baby.

I am 30 weeks pregnant with my second child and my doctor has told me it is ok to use a heating pad but if you use it on your lower stomach to turn it on the lowest setting. He said it is ok to use on your lower back as well or wherever you need some relief. I recently had a urinary tract infection and had to use one more often to help deal with the pain. Everything should be fine but if you have questions just call your doctors office and talk with the nurse.

there has been some thoughts going around for years about the electromagnetic waves given off by high tension lines and brain cancer...the case that is used to bolster that thought is that school that was right next to high tension lines and the ratio of kids getting brain cancer was 100 times more common there than anywhere else in the US.
the heat will not do a thing,. but not too sure about anything else
i would stop just in case...

Heat can affect a growng fetus, but I think that is heat that actually raises your body temperature. Like in a hot tub. I would stop the use right over your abdomen to be safe though.
