We just got some goldfish for our kids. The filter is pretty loud. They never swim near the filter and I am wondering if the sound bothers them. Also is it bad to leave the tank light on all the time?

The fish probably avoid the filter due to the FEEL of the turbulence of the water rather than the SOUND itself. This is not unusual as they are being put into a new environment. Given time they will probably adjust to this and learn to ignore it as time goes on. Right now it is new to them and a bit frightening.

As for leaving the light on all of the time, no, it is probably not a good idea. The light on 24/7 provides an unnatural environement for the fish and this leads to stress on the fish. They need to rest like everyone else does, following the natural light cycle is best.

If you have several fish in the tank of different sizes, or types, don't forget to include several objects in the tank to provde for seperation spaces. Plants, real or fake, are ideal for this.

Good luck with your fish.

They are avoiding the force of water from filter because they are not strong enough to overcome the current. It is NOT a good idea to leave lights on 24/7 because light generates heat which encourages growth of bacteria and along with light heat enhances algae growth. The sound of filter may bother you, but under water it is greatly muffled and I assume the fish consider it a very passive part of their environment.
Best to turn aquarium lights off at night, also not good idea to place aquarium in direct sunlight for all same reasons above.
