i would say the gameboy advance.
it doesn't matter if she's a girly girl, or tomboyish, everyone plays video games now a days.
the DS can play gameboy advance games, true, but the problem is that the girl is six.
my brother is almost eight, and has the ability to get chocolate milk on his hands, above his eyes, and near his ears while he drinks. he doesn't wash his hands afterwards, when someone doesn't see him do it right then and there. then he picks up the GBA i bought him for his birthday last year.
the touch screen might get dirty, if this girl isn't a nicely clean kid like i was.. also, a six year old can get frustrated, and possibly push harder on the touch screen than necessary, possibly damaging it. the retail store i work in had an incident like that with the display DS, an 8 year old got frustrated with kirby, and the screen was scratched really bad
the gameboy advance can play gameboy advance games, just like the DS, and also it can play older games that the DS can't, because it has a seperate engine in it. there are hundreds and hundreds of games she can play on the GBA

Don't listen to people telling you to get a PSP. The PSP is not the right handheld for a 6 year old. The PSP is quite fragile, so if she drops it or be rough with it, it's done. There are a lot more games that's rated Teen to Mature than there are games rated E for everyone.
The advantage of getting the DS is that it can play both DS and Game Boy Advanced games. Disadvantage is that it's a little bit more expensive than the GBA.
Get the GBA if you want to save a little bit of money, but otherwise, get the DS Lite. It's much better than the GBA. Also, be sure to get a screen protector because the stylus can ruin the DS Lite's screen.
Nintendo is more family oriented than Sony, so you will find a lot more games that's geared towards the younger kids.
