Absolutely.
The only thing hooligans understand is force. It is absolutely unfair to the kids who want to learn, to allow these deliberately ignorant assholes to control the classroom.
In fact, caning should be extended beyond the classroom. There are a good many criminals who would be served far better by a public bullwhipping than by jail time.

As a teacher who had to be a witness to canings in the the 1980s, I say ABSOLUTELY NOT!. it is barbaric. Yes, students and teachers should be respectful of each other. Parents should take responsibility and teach their children manners and respect for others. Parents today, from my experience, seem more prepared to blame the teachers, the school, society in general for the problems caused by their children and because of necessity, most parents are working full time and this creates a sense of gulit about the lack of time available to be with their children, they simply buy them stiuff like ipods etc. just to get some peace and quiet.
Yes, teachers should be protected from verbal and physical abuse.and should be given the respect they deserve from the community. The job of teaching today is more about trying to manage the behavioural disorders of spoilt and rude children. leaving little time for the actual teaching process. Is it any wonder that the teaching profession is not attracting young uni graduates. In the next 7/8 years, around 40% of Australia's teachers will retire and there will be a major shortage. Will these teachers need to be recruited from overseas?
I am constantly tired of people saying what wonderful holidays we teachers get and then on the other hand being told I don't know how you put up with the kids of today. Well, I worked over 52 hours this week and that is about average. There are some wonderful young people that I teach and it is a shame that a small portion of those students prevent me from doing my job as effectively as I would wish but bringing back the cane is not an answer. Violence only begets violence.

You can not bring back the cane. I am a father first and I would never want anyone to discipline my son with a cane. I don't use physical force on him so I don't know why an institution of learning should be able to do that.
Secondly, I am a teacher. As a teacher you need to earn respect. It isn't given to you. You need to set expectations and enforce those expectations. I have no discipline problems in my classroom and I teach in a pretty tough part of town.
The cane will not stop discipline problems. It doesn't work that way. It is like saying the death penalty will stop people from murdering.

no one ever respected teachers, unless the teacher earned our respect, the guy with the cane was resented and feared, dont mix that up with respect.
Kids dont respect anything these days and they are learning habits from the things they see im sure most parents try to teach their children to respect, but they dont have much to respect, and they dont really care about how others feel they only care about themselves, so those kids who cause problems should be removed from the system, with no financial support except the offer of a job in the military, the military doesnt have a problem teaching respect, it begins with pride, and what do these kids have to be proud of?

Yes, it is a very good idea because all children need a sence of reality. I mean, when we were kids we had it and i think they should have the same tourture as we did.
I cant do this at home, because personally i dont have any kids but i think it could be brought into homes too to give kids disaplin at home. As you rightfully said in your question kids shouldnt only be disaplined at school but also at home.
So, yes the cane should make a comeback :D

They should never of banned it, but they did and now I think it would be impossible to reintroduce it. Which is a pity as it worked.
I was caned twice. Once for smoking in the toilets and once for bunking off. It hurt like hell at the time, but didn’t do me lasting harm and I never did either again.

I agree with your statements, I have a 10 year old daughter, and by no means is she disrespectful to her teachers or anyone for that matter. I think I'm doing well raising her alone (her father passed away). She has always known never to be disrespectful to anyone. I'm truly blessed.
She is also an A+ student.
