With broadband you are always connected and does not need to dial up for a connection even when you shutdown the computer you are still connected.
when you are asked select your connection choose broadband or you could click on tools then click on Internet options, then click on connections and make sure that you have "never dial a connection" checked this way you will always be connected to the broadband service rather then the dial up option, once you have done this restart your computer so that the changes can take affect. I am not surprised that nothing happens if you are on broadband and the computer is trying to dial up, for this is two different systems, to get an idea on how to set this up have a look at your friends connection setup and then make the same changes to your computer. good luck.
