I have been paying a SEO company to promote/improve my site ranking for well over a year, but my site never seems to get far up the list. I have taken to using PPC on Google because my business depends on getting customers.

Is it worth paying a SEO company, or is there a better way of promoting my website?

I would question what your SEO Company is doing for you. After a year you should definitely be seeing results. If you’re not seeing traffic or ranking improvements they probably aren’t doing anything that will help you.

I have been researching SEO for several years and finding techniques to optimize my websites. Let me first explain what I’ve found to work for my sites.

Bare with me here, I'm getting to the point.

Onsite Optimization:
Don’t worry about keyword optimization too much. Build your website for the people who are going to be using it or purchasing from it. Good content is the key. Don’t build your website for search engines. I would try to put your keywords into at least a couple of the following, without spamming of course, 1) Title 2) URL 3) Header Tags 4) Body. I wouldn’t bother with Meta Tags, Alt Tags or anything else that can easily be considered spamming. Make sure your code is clean. There are free html validating services out there.

Offsite Optimization:
This is the most important part of SEO. Build relevant links to your website. Use your keywords in the text that links back to your website (anchor text). Keep in mind “relevant sites” not necessarily the same or competition sites. I use http://www.linkingexperts.com to find relevant links when I’m doing my SEO. Also keep in mind you want links to look natural. If your site is about baby books use different anchor texts like funny baby books, educational baby books, or whatever have you.

So to the point, I would suggest using a freelancer to do your SEO work the way you want it done. You can find one at any of the freelance sites out there, http://www.flatratefreelancers.com http://www.scriptlance.com http://www.elance.com to name a few.

I would also suggest continuing to use PPC while you optimize your website. That is, if you’re making money using PPC. I find it hard to profit using PPC unless I’m making a large profit on each sale.

I hope this helps.

It seems as though you have employed one of the thousands of useless and incompetent SEO companies.

When you choose an SEO company you should start by talking with a few companies that are members of the Organization of Search Engine Optimization Professionals http://www.seopros.org/

When you have narrowed down to a short list ask each for five references from clients they took on a year ago. Make sure you telephone them all and have an in depth chat about their experiences with the company.

Never take a recommendation for a particular company off a board like this one.

If you find that they are too expensive (and the good ones are not cheap) consider doing it in house. It's not rocket science, for example here is an experts tutorial http://www.seo-blog.com/tutorial.php

Hi,

A good friend of mine Andy Theekson, has been doing SEO for about 5 years and I'm sure will be glad to check out what your SEO has been doing on your site both in on-page and off-page optimization and advise you if he thinks they are doing a good job.

He loves doing this investigative type of work.

He has helped a lot of people, frequently at no charge or for a donation to help children in need. What ever you think his advice is worth you donate - it's that simple.

He provides a number of free reports so if you think he could help you resolve issues with your SEO then I suggest you contact him through his web site at:

There's no trick to it: make a good website, and your search rankings will improve. Any site that is built logically, with valid, well-structured code and good content is already as easy as possible for search engines to index, and for other sites to link to.

So if the code of your site is poor, then you need a SEO, if your code is modern, valid and well structured then a SEO is completely useless and won't make any major difference.
