every time I try and enter a password for a website (most recently HSBC and the government statistics website) a box comes up offering to remember the password and whether I click yes no or never, it makes the internet stop running and closes the window. I've tried to turn it off under internet options but i cant do it - any ideas?

most probably your user account has some corruption in it. You could delete and recreate the user id which would refresh the default profile, or just download firefox (www.mozilla.com) or opera, or Internet explorer v7 and use a different browser.

Firefox has better security than Internet explorer anyway and is my preference, especially when using internet banking.

I would guess you have a virus (Trojan) that's trying to steal your passwords ...
