I had 2 pet gerbils. In the morning, I found one of my gerbils missing. The top part of the cage (mesh wire) was destroyed. Did the gerbil escape or did one of my cats eat him? I have 5 cats.

Only 1 ecaped. The other gerbil is safe. If the cats did eat him, why did they only take 1 gerbil?

I dont think your cat it eat. you gerbil must be hiding. check under your beds or and where that nice and cozzy for a gerbil to hide. take all your cats away from the house. put some gerbil food around your house coz when the gerbil is hungry he will come out to find food. I do that when my hamster escape. i found it when he came out under my bed search for food.

If you didn't find the gerbil, maybe he is hiding. Put all of your cats in another closed room and see if the gerbil will come out. Wait a few days or weeks before giving up on him.

If you find him the other will likely have lost the memory of his scent. So introduce the two using a split cage:

If you can a new gerbil to keep the other company, also use a split cage.

Sounds like it was the cats. A gerbil wouldn't be able to climb up and gnaw through the top of the cage.

Perhaps you should feed the cats more (and keep them out of the room with the remaining gerbil).

I think it is safe to assume that one of the cats isn't quite as hungry as all the others. Really examine that cage and make SURE that it is secure. At your house, it doesn't matter if the gerbils escape or the cats invade......the outcome is the same! :} Good luck over there.

i dont think a cat would touch a gerbil. It is probably hiding somewhere. I dont say this to be mean, but if you smell something really bad under your bed you will know what it is.

gerbils are escape artists, if he did get out, and your cats found him, it's unlikely he would have survived.

do i bit of a CSI on your tank lid, was it destroyed from the outside or from the inside? that should answer your question for the culprit!

i would say cats, in my opinion, bcuz gerbils can't get through a mesh-wire lid. i have one for a top on my gerbil tank, and they are still there.

The gerbil could have escaped... I recommend looking behind all pieces of furniture and looking for gerbil poop. If you have wooden floors, you could sprinkle talcum over them and see if you can find any paw prints.

was your gerbil strong enough to destroy the mesh? are there any tufts of hair or other clues? watch your cats; if the gerbil is loose in the house and hiding they will give away it's hiding place. please secure your other gerbil...

Put out some food and a water thing, Them wait till it gets dark outside and the poor little guy will start hunting for food. Oh and when you see him (this is the fun part) catch him with a (strong) butterfly net (otherwisy he'll prob'ly chew right throug it)
