They are trying to ban the use of the so-called "n-word". I find this troubling on any number of levels. The first, most obvious problem is that of the First Amendment. The entire reason the Founding Fathers protected the right of free speech was the protect unpopular speech. Further, does the Council intend to ban all other derogatory ethnic terms as well? I'm Irish. Where do I go to have someone locked up if I'm called a Mick? Finally, are there no longer any real problems in New York, so that the Council has the time and wherewithall to tackle something like this?

What do you all think?

What I read was it's not going to be a law (banning the n-word), just a suggestion.

Sometimes the word is used in a non-insult way, like in the hilarious movie Blazing Saddles.

This is a joke. I tried to start a thread about it, but it never seemed to make the board. Hmmmm...
It's not even directed at white racists. It's a move by Bill Cosby type conservative blacks against young hiphop culture. Their argument is lame, and anyone who thinks that the ACLU would stand behind them obviously wasn't watching when the ACLU defended the right of neo Nazis to march.

I'm assuming that they know it would never survive a court challenge and are doing it for symbolic reasons. The hope is probably that all the publicity will cause people to think twice about using racial slurs.

If they get their way then there will be no stopping them from banning other words. Bet you a million bucks the ACLU will stand behind them and the Webster Dictionary will even change the definition of Illegal Alien to something else. You watch.
