I have heard that these are not all they are cracked up to be, have you got one? I would prefer an upright, would like it to be usable as a vacuum only, but also to shampoo the carpets well when required (my husband is a mechanic, the muck gets everywhere!

I've had a Vax (one of the orange ones) for years. A bit on the big size and slightly fiddly to set up as a shampooer, but does both jobs excellently as far as I'm concerned. (Usual disclaimer!)

If you do not want to put alot of money into one, check at WalMart. I have seen them there. I have a Vacumn Cleaner and a Bissel that I use to shampoo my Carpet. I have a pet Dog and I suffer with allergys, so I shampoo about every three months. You would be surprised just how nasty your carpets do get in a short amount of time.

My husband bought a kirby. I thought Oh great I know the vacuum good but shampooing the carpet to? Well to my suprise it did a great job!! I wouldnt recommend it for heavily stained carpets but moderate to mild its awesome!! I would rent a rug dr. if the carpets are really bad. The great thing about the kirby is they last forever!! As long as you service it as needed. My mother has had hers for almost 15 years and its still going strong with only one service!!

I have only ever hired a carpet cleaner, but out of interest Argos have one half price at the moment. It is about £60 instead of £120.

hire one, because its not the sort of thing you would use daily/weekly.

as for a general purpose dry hoover, you cant beat an Henry, as they are pretty much industry vacuums retail about £80. well worth the money. and not like all this toy town plastic hoovers you can get.

Funny enough, you know Hoover was actually the brand name, but now we all use the term hoover/hoovering.
