You are right and the other answers that said otherwise are wrong. Bettas are actually quite peaceful fish except for their own kind. Feel free to include a betta in a community tank, they usually do very well. The only thing you really need to watch out for is that you don't have fin nippers that would hurt the betta.
Best of luck!

Its alright to keep a betta in a large tank with other tropical fish. Just make sure your fish are not the fin nipping type or have fin similar to a betta.

Male bettas will fight with either male or female bettas, and may nip the fins of any fish you have with long flowing fins, like gourami, or angelfish. However, bettas are NOT a coldwater fish, and absolutly need a heater to survive, and they will not bother the majority of tropical community fish. I keep a betta in all my community tanks, and their colors are better, they're more active, and imo, much more happy.

a betta is a tropical fish so appreciates warm water anyway.
as for going in your community, it depends what fish you already have!
if you have a long tailed betta, he cannot be kept with any nippy fish, which include some tetras and barbs. he cannot be kept with other aggressive fish such as most cichlids, chinese algae eaters, red tailed or rainbow sharks. he cannot be kept with gouramies/paradise fish, they're family relatives and can come to blows! i've recently rescued a poor betta who was ripped to shreds by paradise fish, no fins left at all.
you must also make sure, if he does go in, that the current caused by the filter is not too strong as bettas aren't very strong swimmers and prefer slower moving water.

a betta will do fine at that temp with other tropicals. Only thing to watch is tiger barbs or other fish that nip fins. Your betta won't be very happy if his fins get bit off. As for the aggressive side of a betta, it is only towards other bettas. They are not "bred to fight" as somebody said :)

Your betta is a tropical fish, it will do just fine with other tropicals. It will pick on fancy male guppies, as the finnage looks similar to betta fins, and if you have any fin nippers in your tropical tank, such as barbs, they may chase after the betta's pretty fins. Wow "hi" has thoroughly the incorrect end of the stick. they could be in heat water and could be energetic fish. in the event that they are in chilly water their metabolism slows down and that they are in a position to't digest their nutrition and die a especially depressing dying! As for introducing them, in basic terms bring up the temperature slowly with the heater, the fish will do something.

male betas are bread for agressiveness. That is why they are kept in individual bowls even in the pet shop. I would only mix them if you really don't like your other fish.
