After the recent events in Alabama, do you think that the US government will finally put some serious money into researching tornadoes and early warning systems, or will the storm chasers have to rely on the money made from tourists to fund the research on their own?

I have lived in the "tornado alley" portion of Alabama my entire life. The system we have now is SO much better than what we had just 20 years ago. Technology is being put to use as is becomes available. The problem is tornadoes are so unpredictable. There is no way the government or anyone else can know exactly when and where one will strike. But they are a lot closer now than they used to be. The thing is to just make sure that if conditions are such that a tornado could form, to be in a safe place. That's really hard to do. You may have a day that looks sunny and beautiful, with warm temperatures, and you have a lot to do. Even if the meteorologists are warning there could be tornadoes, 95% of the time, nothing major is going to happen in your area. So it's hard to make yourself stay in and watch the weather. People tend to take a "wait and see" approach, which just isn't too practical, since things can change really fast. There is nothing the government can do about that.
I have been through tornadoes, one of them very close. I have family members who have lost homes to tornadoes. Unless you've dealt with them, it's hard to understand what it's like, and how impossible it is to predict accurately.

The sirens they are talking about installing are fine if you live within 3 or4 blocks of them but it is time for a little personal responsibility there are alert radios that are not expensive and will wake the dead. You set for your location and you get a heads up about 20 minutes ahead of time. The storms that hit last night and yesterday afternoon were predicted well ahead of time if you chose to ignore the early warnings and let your children stay in an unsafe environment who's fault is that. The weather service and the local TV stations will even send an alert to your cell phone. Right now they are saying we will have bad storms here between 10 am and 11 am I have the weather channel on my TV and my husband who is at work has his cell on so he can and will get up dates. It is 8 am so we have about 2 hours notice !

You know, most Republicans are in denial when it comes to global warming and the weather pattern change. I don't know how to explain these ignorant people !!!
