Standby shuts off everything except the electricity to keep what is in memory running.

Hibernate puts everything that is in memory onto the disk before shutting down the power totally.

If windows was a perfect operating system you would never need to power it off the old way. But Windows does need to be powered off about once a week.

In between this, I use standby when I don't use the PC, or I use hibernate when I need to change the battery (I have 2 batteries on my laptop).

For those who think stoping the computer each time you don't need it for some time because it saves electricity, I think you are wrong:
When you power off your computer and power it on again the next time, windows takes so much time to do it, that it uses a lot of electricity.
Going to standby mode and resuming takes about one second, so this saves electricity.
Going to hibernate mode and back takes more time, but is still much faster than stopping and starting.

So if you plan to not use the pc for about an hour, then go to hibernate mode, otherwise use standby mode.

If you want to save energy, then use a laptop with a processor that does not use too much electricity.
And if you really want to save energy, use a laptotp with the battery removed (plug the laptop to the wall.
And hibernate the computer as soon as possible

While it should not make a difference, you want to make observations on how well it really works for you and your computer.

You see, if you use Hibernation this week.... and find that some programs HANG after experiencing Hibernation, then use Standby instead. OR many your computer wakes up from Hibernation much slower than Standby.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

U can always put your computer into hibernation because the next time you start you dont need to restart all your applications.
And one more advantage is that you get your system in as it is when it comes out from hibernation.

Does not really make a diffrence, Just that if you Hibernate or stand by it justs saves more power, I would only advise this if you will be using it within 20 mins or something, not overnight, i woud advise shutdown, or log off. cause this way, the system neeeds time to cool down and reboot once in a while.

stand by is good for short periods of time as it just runs off minimal power

hibernation is good for extended periods of time as it completely switches off the computer and doesn't use any power at all - just saves everything - desktop settings, programs in use etc to harddrive before shutting off - restoring exactly the same when you boot up

I always switch my computer completely OFF, when I don't need it for 1 hour or more...Saves lots of energy & money and your computer also "lives" longer. I NEVER use Standby for my computer, TV-set, VCR, etc...And you can save up to € 100 or more a year when you always switch off your electronic stuffs.
