you better go by train. you can go there with an ABC fare zone ticket, it's 2,60 for a single way ticket and 6,00 euro for a day ticket.

the trains go at least to midnight there and back and of course you can return in the evening...

tourist places are the big park with all the castles in it (including sanssouci), you can visit it by going out two stations after potsdam hauptbahnhof/main station. here's a map: http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/pb4/pg2/equipment/sims/images/s-bahn-netz.gif (potsdam down left)
The other sights: the inner city with the "brandenburger strasse", park babelsberg with babelsberg castle, the dutch quarter near the inner city and some churches and town gates in inner city.

take a train or s-bahn to potsdam from any bigger station in berlin, for example zoo station, main station or alexanderplatz, the train will leave at nearly all bigger stations (take a look at the map)

Ah common it`s too easy
Check the maps in the internet or buy one
However look forward to it it is in the south , not far from dresden
