John Grisham is high on my list. I'm a paralegal, and reading his law stories bore me to death! Steven King has to be next. I'm sorry, Steve--you write better short stories than novels, and you don't have to mention every commercial product ever made (He was wearing his Nike sneakers, drinking his Coca Cola in his Star Wars pajamas).
Which modern authors do you think aren't worth the hype?

I'll definitely agree that Dan Brown is overrated. My biggest problem with him is the lack of characterization in his novels. It's like you're reading some plot-driven SF serial in the fifties. In fact, I can think of SF writers that produce better character-driven stories than Brown.

I like Stephen King's earliest work (Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, The Shining), but once he became popular and famous, he just started churning out novels with seemingly little thought. His Dark Tower series isn't too bad, so he partially redeemed himself in my eyes, but for the most part I think he should sit back and put a little more thought into his mainstream novels.

Anne Rice is another one. I know people generally either love her or hate her, and I'm definitely in the latter category. I don't think her stories or characters are as well developed as they could be. Everything is rather flat in her books.

Have to agree with you on steven king,i find with his books,he likes you to know the characters inside out, nothing wrong in that you might say,but he takes it to the extreme,he will still be going on about the same character for about 5 chapters, and you still know nothing of the plot as he forgets to make any reference to it,yawwwwwn.
Now shaun hutson or richard layman, completly different story, their stories start at the first page, excellent stuff.

Dan Brown. " The Da Vinci Code " was an interesting topic for a book but the book was not well written.

I agree with Dan Brown. It's kind of sad how many people name him as a favorite author with his "made-for-tv movie" writing style.

Danielle Steel, I always wanted to read her books because she was supposedly some "critically acclaimed, celebrated best selling author." well I did read her books, well actually I read one chapter.
They sucked.
