I've always travelled the states using Motel 6.
I have never felt unsafe in any of their locations.

They are probably the most reasonably priced national chain; have literally thousands of motels (several in the larger cities); serviced daily and generally are clean and comfortable.

Obviously, some sites are older than others and that is usually reflected in the price.

The staff vary of course.
Generally, if you treat people courteously, they do the same.

The nightly prices varies from place to place; Flagstaff, AZ will be cheaper then Chicago. IL.

You can pick up a (complimentary) booklet from Motel 6 with all their locations (addresses, directions, maps, facilities and price) detailed state-by-state.

Next to motel 6, in a similar price range is (I've included all the links to their websites for you to do a price comparison):
Super 8

Knights Inn

Econo Lodge:

Prices vary a lot from place to place in the U.S. You will generally pay more near large cities and in resort areas and less in more rural areas. Choice Hotels (www.choicehotels.com) operates the Quality and Comfort Inns a previous poster recommended. Sleep Inns, which are also operated by Choice, are more likely to be in your price range and will almost always be new and well maintained. Choice properties start around the price you mention and can cost up to $100 or so (and more in downtown areas of major cities).

Away from major cities you can often find Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn, and Fairfield Inn in the price range you mention or for just slightly more than that. All of these are very nice, consistent chains. In more popular locations they will all be well beyond your budget.

Others have recommended Motel 6. In small cities these can cost as little as $30 a night, while in major cities they can cost up to $80. There is nothing wrong with Motel 6, but you must realize that the rooms will be VERY basic and the service will be minimal. They will, however, be clean and they are normally in relatively safe areas.

Super 8 and Days Inn are nationwide chains that are right in the price range you mention (again except for downtown locations in big cities). Both chains can be VERY inconsistent, though. Some of their properties are quite nice, while others are disgusting.

I prefer hotels such as Quality Inn or Comfort Inn & Suites, they are higher quality but do cost a little more. For that price you are looking at Motel 6 or maybe Super8. I know the Motel 6 used to be decent, but I think they have gone downhill some in recent years. I'm not sure what the Super8 is charging now. It all depends what city your in also, the prices vary.

You might want to try Rodeway Inn or Econolodge also. They are lower in price, and are your basic motels. Clean, comfortable, with no extra amenities or frills.

The Hilton chain is owned by Hilton and all the employees work for Hilton instead of working for a franchise owner. Hampton Inns is one Hilton owned hotel that is a good value.
