In Layman's terms the original definition of an Ethernet is a network which allows all devices on a network (printers, routers, PC's etc) to communicate over a single cable (an Ethernet cable). Ethernet technology made it easy to expand the network to connect additional devices together.

That was in 1973 however, technology has moved on since then and it is now used to describe the standard cables and adapters used to build a Local Area Network (LAN), i.e routers, PC's, servers and printers connected together in either a single building or in close proximity to each other.

Other network types include Token-ring, Wireless, Appletalk and FDDI. These differ to Ethernet in terms of the hardware involved in connecting the networks, the methods used to transfer communication and avoid collisions, possible network topologies and the type of hardware devices they support.

Ethernet is now a IEEE standard (IEEE 802.3) which standardises the use of Ethernet technology. A prime of example of this is the Internet where the standardisation of Ethernet has enabled the Internet to grow exponentially.

comes from the concept of "ether"

basically a networking standard - having the same wiring, signals, etc. so that every computer in the world can communicate across this common transport medium - sort of like phone lines

used to connect lots of computers together!!
