Is this why some of us feel like life is mediocre because of all these habits we have created? We have become mechanical...

Because we get into a routine of doing something which our bodies and brains get used to, to the point we do it without even realising.
Also things such as biting your nails can be a nervous thing, something you do when feeling ever so slightly uneasy.
Another reason could just be something that started in early childhood that for whatever reason that has just stuck. As some previous answerers have noted everyone is individual so the reasons they start will be different for each person.
I would also just like to say that this has got to be the most serious answer i've ever given, i cant quite believe i typed this much without saying something stupid (apart from this sentance).

Habits make doing things easier. When you go to start the car, you do the same thing which saves time. If you climbed in thru the passenger door somedays, thru the back passenger door the other, you would lose time due to the ineffeciency of continually experimenting with the method of entry.
Where habits become a problem is when they no longer serve a useful, time-saving measure and instead become self-destructive or put us into a rut.
I have bad habits like Yahoo Answers that keep me from reaching my full potential of being the oldest astronaut to begin training... but I'll get over it.

I think habits are formed because of familiarity, for example someone will start biting their nails because they're nervous. Biting their nails might be a way to sooth them with a familiar action.
Basically habits help with calming someone in some instances.

I believe they re a safety valve. We have to face so many uncertainties in our lives that to balance things out we have "habits" and "routines" that we are totally familiar with that makes us feel confident and safe within ourselves.
